Pinterest: The Ultimate Discovery Engine to Find and Save the Things You Love

Pinterest had a huge launch party to announce some fantastic updates to their addictive website. Guided search is the biggest feature and I think it’s going to change the way the internet finds things. Pinterest is organized, categorized, and populated with over 30 billion (with a b) Pins and they’re turning them into a discovery tool to help you find the things that you love, even if you didn’t know you loved it yet.

Here’s Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann’s announcement about guided search shot by Guy Kawasaki, Canva’s Chief Evangelist at the event. Click here to see Guy’s photos from the event at the Pinterest HQ.
From Pinterest, “Exploring interests is a huge part of how people use Pinterest (interest is our middle name, after all!). We often check in to see how and what people Pin, and what we’ve learned is that people’s interests generally fall into five categories:
a passion that’s a core part of who you are, like music, photography or sports
a vocation that’s part of your training, like a teacher using Pinterest to find lesson plan ideas or an architect sharing design ideas with a client
a hobby that you do for fun, like running or fishing
a project that has an end goal, like a wedding or redecorating your living room
a preference that can change, like your taste in colors or types of shoes”

1 Discover things you love

Imagine typing in “hockey wedding cake” into Google. You would see something that looks like this:

If you type this into the update Pinterest using guided search, which is rolling out and not available to everyone yet, you’ll see this. This screenshot is from the Pinterest event and provided by Guy Kawasaki.

2 Visual search and discovery

Pinterest’s guided search stream shows rich data with photos, descriptions, and social proof showing the repins and likes on each image. You’ll also have suggestions from:
  • Pins that are on the same pinboard
hockey mini cakes
  • The “also from this website” under the board that it’s pinned to
  • Also pinned on these boards under the Pin
  • Related Pins

3 What is guided search?

Here’s Guided Search in the words of Pinterest:

It’s visual

“Sometimes you don’t know what you’re looking for until you see it.”

It’s helpful

“New descriptive guides help steer your search in the right direction.”

It’s full of possibilities

“Find what you’re looking for and make a few discoveries along the way.”

4 Curated by hand

Pins are created and added by people. Finding a Pin that you like can lead to discovering a new board with hand-picked Pins all surrounding the same topic. “Discover ideas for any project or interest, hand-picked by people like you.”

5 Custom categories

Will be added to help you search and follow newly added Pinterest categories. This will allow you to narrow your Pinterest experience to certain themes or topics if you choose.

6 How the magic happens

6 Find your next adventure

My favorite message from Pinterest is that they want you to find and save all the beautiful Pins but also to use Pinterest to make your life better. Bake the cake you pinned, build the palette swing that you’ve been coveting, and take the road trip that you planned. Life is full of possibilities. Don’t just pin it, do it!
